Lifted Club Car Precedent: the driver cable comes up short
Lift a Precedent and the driver-side cable often ends up under tension even with your foot off the pedal, which shows up as brakes that drag, lock up or barely work. Owners in r/golfcarts and on Amazon fix it one of two ways: Club Car's longer 39-inch driver cable (OEM 47562652001, which owners cite for a 4-inch lift), or a stock passenger cable — about 49 inches — run on the driver side. One owner says unclipping the cable from its mid-run spring mount is sometimes enough. Whichever you do, the test is the same: with your foot off the pedal, the rear wheels should spin freely, and the brakes should bite evenly when you press.
Getting the old cable out
- The Precedent cable locks into the frame with spring fingers. Owners compress them with a 13 mm deep socket or a 1/2-inch wrench pushed over the keeper, instead of Club Car's removal tool.
- On an E-Z-GO TXT, each cable is held by E-clips that usually come off rusted. None of the sets ranked here include them, so buy four before you start.
- Readjust the brakes once the new cables are in, and leave a little slack. A cartaholics forum regular warns that owners tighten the cable equalizer "down too far, and the self adjusting mechanism on the brakes doesn't have enough cable slack" to work.
